How to Connect a Battery to a Terminal Block

Terminal Block

are convenient for making multiple connections to a marine battery. A large cable makes the connection from each terminal on the battery to its own terminal block. The terminal block is a series of terminal studs that are connected inside of a non-conductive mount. A large terminal stud on the end carries power from the battery cable to the small terminals. The small terminal studs use ring or U terminals crimped to the wires that feed your devices. The terminal block and battery cables must be sized to carry the load from all of your devices.

Lay the red and black cable out along the desired routing from the battery to the terminal block. Cut the cable to length--be careful to not cut it too short.

Strip the last 1/2 inch of insulation off of all four ends. Insert each end into a terminal lug and place the lug into the lug crimper. Strike the crimper with the hammer until the lug is thoroughly crimped tight.

Connect the wires to the battery posts--red to positive, black to negative--and their respective terminal blocks. Install the lockwashers and tighten the battery bolts and terminal block nuts down firmly.
