How to Secure a Rack Mount

Plastic Box , Plastic Box , Plastic Waterproof Enclosure , Hand-held Enclosure

Rack mounts are a convenient solution for the safe and accessible storage of large electronic equipment. You might be an audio producer looking for a way to store hardware compressors, amps and pre-amps. You might be a computer system administrator who needs a way to store lots of servers while maintaining access to them for maintenance. Whatever your field might be, if you use large, blinking boxes for some reason, knowing how to secure that equipment to a rack mount is important.

Instructions

  1. 1

Use a tape measure to calculate the vertical distance between the holes in the chassis' mounting bracket. Standard distances between rack mount holes are 0.5 inches, 0.625 inches and 1.25 inches (0.625 inches multiplied by 2). Use this measurement to determine which set of holes on the rack you wish to use.

  2. 2

Push a screw through a hole in one of the mounting brackets and into one of the front side holes in the chassis. Use a screwdriver to tighten it part way, then push another screw through the other hole in the mounting bracket and into the corresponding side hole in the chassis. Repeat this process for the other mounting bracket on the other side of the chassis.

  3. 3

Use screws and a screwdriver to secure the rack mount rails to the sides of the chassis (if applicable). This process is similar to the previous step.

  4. 4

Push screws through the two holes in the front of one of the rack mount slides, then secure the rack mount slide to the front of the rack by pushing the screws through two of the 0.5-inch holes on the front of the rack. Use a screwdriver and the bar nut (attached to the slide) to tighten the screws.

  5. 5

Repeat the previous step to secure the rear of the slide to the rear of the rack. Likewise, attach the other slide to the other side of the rack. You should now have slides attached on the left and right sides of the rack, rails attached to the left and right sides of the chassis and rack mount brackets attached to the front of the chassis.

  6. 6

Pull the rack-mounted slides all the way out and carefully insert the ends of the chassis-mounted rails into the rack-mounted slides. Push in the chassis, toward the rear of the rack, until its rails snap in place. If there is an intermediate stop, push in the stop latches on the rails and slide the chassis all the way back into the rack.

  7. 7

Push screws through the holes in the mounting brackets and into the corresponding holes in the rack, and use a screwdriver to tighten the screws.
